They stepped through the gate and emerged into a world that should not have existed beneath the desert. A vast underground cavern opened before them, illuminated by phosphorescent crystals embedded in the ceiling that mimicked the pattern of constellations overhead. At the center of the cavern lay an oasis of impossible beauty: a lake of perfectly clear water surrounded by date palms, flowering shrubs, and grass so green it made Khalil's eyes ache after days of endless sand. Buildings lined the shore, constructed from the same dark stone as the gate, their architecture elegant and precise. Meridian had not been destroyed. It had been hidden. 'The entire city retreated underground,' Khalil said, turning slowly to absorb the scale of it. 'They built a gate and sealed themselves away.' 'The question is why,' Dara replied, but she was not looking at the city. She was looking at the water, which had begun to glow with a soft golden light that pulsed like a heartbeat. They explored cautiously. The buildings were empty but immaculate, as if their inhabitants had stepped out moments ago and might return at any time. Khalil found a library filled with scrolls and bound volumes written in languages that spanned millennia, from the ancient script on the map to texts he could actually read. He opened a volume at random and discovered a treatise on astronomy that described celestial bodies which Western science had not discovered until the twentieth century. 'They knew,' he said, his hands trembling. 'They knew everything. Mathematics, medicine, engineering far beyond what their era should have allowed.' Dara appeared in the doorway. 'We have a problem. The gate is still open, and I can hear Voronov's team on the other side. They are setting charges.' Khalil clutched the book to his chest. 'They will destroy everything.' 'Not if we close the gate first. The mechanism must be here somewhere. Help me find it.'
