They found the first temple on the fifth morning, though the word found implied agency that Elara was not certain they possessed. The structure had revealed itself. One moment they were hacking through dense undergrowth, and the next a clearing opened before them as if the jungle had decided to part like a curtain. The temple rose from a foundation of living roots. Massive ceiba trees had grown into walls, their branches forming arched doorways of smooth pale wood. Stone blocks were embedded within the trunks, ancient masonry that the trees had consumed and incorporated into their own architecture over centuries of patient growth. Carvings covered every visible surface, depicting figures wearing elaborate headdresses and holding objects that Elara could not immediately identify. Some resembled astronomical instruments. Others looked disturbingly like circuit boards. Jin-soo photographed everything with methodical urgency while Marcus collected soil samples from the base of the structure. Riku ran his fingers over the carvings and gasped audibly. 'These are linguistic,' he said, his voice trembling. 'This is a writing system unlike anything in the known record. The grammar appears to be three-dimensional. Each symbol modifies the ones above and below it, not just those beside it.' Elara entered the temple through the largest archway. Inside, the air was cool and carried a sweet resinous fragrance that reminded her of incense and old libraries. The floor was a mosaic of polished stone and exposed root, forming patterns that guided her deeper into the structure. She found a central chamber where shafts of light descended from gaps in the canopy far above, illuminating a stone altar covered in the same intricate script. On the altar lay a single object: a jade disc the size of her palm, perfectly smooth and warm to the touch. The moment her fingers closed around it, the carvings on every wall began to emit a soft golden light. The temple was waking up.
