The path led Marina through the silver forest and up a ridge where the wind carried strange harmonics, low tones that vibrated in her chest like the lowest note of a pipe organ. She paused to catch her breath and looked back toward the shore. The Delphine sat motionless in the shallows, a small white shape against the darkening water. Above her, the canopy parted to reveal a clearing dominated by a structure she could only describe as a lighthouse, though it resembled no lighthouse she had ever seen. It was built from the same translucent material as the beach pebbles, scaled up to towering proportions. The walls were thick and cloudy, like frosted glass, and inside them a column of soft amber light rose and fell with that same rhythmic pulse. There was no lantern room, no Fresnel lens, no iron railing. Just a smooth spire that tapered to a point, radiating warmth she could feel from thirty feet away. Marina circled the structure slowly, running her hand along its surface. It was warm to the touch, almost feverish, and beneath her fingertips she felt a faint vibration, like pressing your palm against the hood of a running car. Near the base, she found an opening just wide enough to step through. Inside, the air was thick and humid, carrying a mineral scent that reminded her of hot springs. The floor sloped downward into the earth, forming a spiral passage that descended into darkness. She switched on her flashlight and followed it. The walls were etched with patterns that might have been writing or might have been purely decorative, flowing lines that branched and reconnected like river deltas seen from above. After descending for what felt like several minutes, the passage opened into a vast underground chamber. At its center, embedded in the stone floor, was a disc of pale blue light the size of a swimming pool, humming with a frequency she felt in her teeth.
